Global Fascisms is an exhibition and a research project.
Global means every country around the world.
Fascism is a way of running a country. It often means that 1 person or a group of people use fear and violence to control everyone.
An exhibition is a collection of art. This exhibition shows artworks by 50 artists from around the world.
Research means finding out about something.
We are finding out about:
We want to understand more about fascism by using art and research at the same time.
We asked artists to think about fascism. Their artwork tells us about their thoughts.
They used painting, film, performance, conversation, writing, and digital formats.
We found artworks about fascism from the past. Comparing artwork from the past and the present teaches us about how fascism has changed.
Social media shows people opinions that they are already likely to agree with.
It often tells people that the past was better – a “golden age”. Even though this is not true.
So, social media can make people feel sure that their views are right.
More and more people around the world are voting for groups and politicians with dangerous fascist views.
The exhibition will help us to think about fascism in new ways and challenge these ideas.
